Bedlam

March 12, 2022 @ 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm

Welcome to the 18th Century. You are visiting Bethlam Royal Hospital, more commonly known as Bedlam. Bedlam was the first psychiatric hospital in England and it still stands today. Thankfully the practices have greatly changed. In this play you’ll observe the conditions the patients (then referred to as inmates) were faced to endure. You’ll watch as two doctors face off with their differing opinions on the way mental illness should be treated. You’ll bare witness to the power dynamics that effect the personal relationships established in this play. Hopefully, all of this will lead you to reflect on your own personal thoughts and biases on mental illness. With the privilege of 300 years of research on the psyche, it is easy to look judgementally upon the past. We hope you’ll ask yourself “How will we be seen in 300 years?”. Content Warning: there
